NOLLYWOOD Versus GHOLLYWOOD: The Fight Gets Messier

Ghanaian Actor, John Dumelo - Arrested In Nigeria
The African movie industry may be heading for a disaster as the rift between the Ghanaian movie industry (Ghollywood) and that of Nigeria, is getting nastier by the day. The latest casualty to fall victim to the quarrel between Ghollywood and Nollywood is Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo, who was allegedly arrested in Nigeria a couple of days ago.

Star Weekly! gathered that John was apprehended on set in Nigeria whiles shooting a new movie for a female Nigerian producer. The sources disclosed that the actor was arrested for refusing to pay an amount Ghanaian actors and producers are supposed to pay before they are permitted to act in any movie in Nigeria.

According to John, they claim that the producer who brought him to Nigeria, did not pay some association levies for bringing a Ghanaian there.

“It was one of the associations which brought in the police. The police didn’t come there on their own,” the embattled actor told news men after his scuffle with the Nigerian police.

John Dumelo’s incident is seen by many as a retaliation to the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) which seized the camera of a Nigerian crew who were allegedly shooting in Ghana without the express permission of the association, few months ago. The crew, who were shooting on the Spintex Road in Accra, refused to identify who the producer was when the FIPAG members confronted them with the police. The officials then decided to confiscate their camera until the producer owned up.

The president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Segun Arinze, has also confirmed the incident saying John was not arrested but was "only stopped from working in Nigeria without permit.”.

The Ghana-Nigeria rift started when Ghanaians reportedly demanded $1,000 from Nigerians acting or producing any movie in Ghana. Nollywood responded by threatening to demand $2,000 from Ghanaians doing same in Nigeria. This has resulted in some serious exchanges between the two camps. Earlier on in the year, actors Van Vicker, Majid Michel and others also faced similar situations in Nigeria and they had to return to Ghana for their own safety.

"Why My Marriage Has Remained Intact" - KATE HENSHAW

While some Nollywood stars are falling in and out of love almost every other day, with the industry recording a pile up of divorces and failed marriages, some have had theirs remain not only intact but also scandal-free.

Amongst the latter few is Kate Henshaw-Nuttal whose 11th year old marriage is still as strong as ever despite her starring in many romantic movies.

Of course, the star actress would not mince words before telling you that the secret of her marriage success lies in her UK born husband who comes from a culture that is far more socially advanced than Nigeria.

According to her, “Celebrities' marriages are not the only ones crashing. Marriages are crashing everywhere. But maybe because we are in the limelight, the stories of celebrities are constantly in the news. The media is at the ready to advertise everything about us. My husband is very much in support of my job. We have been married for the past 11 years, and he knows how hard and demanding my job is. He also knows that I am not always at home, and whenever I am with my family, I spend quality time with them. If the job comes, and he says go, I will go. If he says don't go I will sit down.”

Kate also spoke on the new development in Nollywood in which movie stars are now becoming producers.

“It is not all of them that are producing. You have to be behind the camera, study the whole process, know how to direct, know how to produce before venturing into it. Not because this person is producing, me too, I must do my own too. Anything worth doing is worth doing well,” she submitted.

LEPA SHANDY: How All My Efforts To Save My Marriage Failed

KANU NWANKWO: I'm Not A Member Of IBB's Campaign Group

At last, Super Eagles striker and international soccer star, Kanu Nwankwu, has come out to debunk the claim that he has joined the IBB Presidential Campaign Group.

Penultimate week, rumours went round town that the footballer had given his unalloyed support to the former military dictator. But a visibly angry Kanu says, far from getting associated with IBB, he’s a professional footballer and social figure who rrespects his public image.
In his words, “How can anybody claim I have joined Babangida campaign train? It's all rubbish and laughable. I am not a politician and I have not endorsed anybody for any election. I am a professional footballer with a reputation and I cherish my image so much. I'm not campaigning for any politician."
A Lagos based political analyst who pleaded anonymity, , said it was possible IBB’s group was trying to ride on the popularity and brand equity of the football star to win more supporters to its side.

KANAYO O KANAYO Flags Off Political Campaigns, Gives Reasons For Choosing The PDP

The 2011 elections will certainly be dramatic as more and more Nollywood stars are going into active politics, the latest being Kanayo O Kanayo, better known as KOK by his fans.
KOK is contesting for Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency in Imo State.
He justifies his foray in active politics as predicated on his mission to be an agent of change.
According to him, “We are all politicians, the only difference is our level of activism in politics. Just as I also tell people, we are all actors, it depends on the kind of acting where we provide service.
In the Law class, I was told that we are all agents no matter what you do. A lawyer, who stands before a judge and doesn’t present his case very well will lose and therefore, he has to act well to tell the judge that he knows the fact and a doctor who performs an operation, wrongly has acted wrongly and therefore, will have a problem in his hands.”
On why he chose to foray into politics, he says “ I am getting into the mainstream right now. Number one is to represent the yearnings and aspirations of my people; this is as a result of the societal contributions I have made through my trade and therefore, I want to represent them at the legislative hierarchy. It would not be out of place for me to say that the industry where I come from will be adequately represented, because we have had people outside our industry barb our hair in our absence and I think it is unfortunate. With my candidature, I believe that the industry will be the better for it.”
But why the PDP of all parties?
The star actor answers “Well, I believe that the PDP has more structures and would provide a better pedestal for anybody who is a first timer. That’s one. I also believe that the PDP is the best. Even with all the wrangling in the party, it still remains the most organized political party. Thank God that the chairman, Dr Nwodo is trying to ensure internal democracy right now, but I still believe that the party still holds the ace in terms of organization, in terms of structure, in terms of spread, accessibility and I think that if they get their acts together with the Jonathan presidency, the sky isn’t going to be the limit for the country.”

Kidnap: UCHE JUMBO Vows Not To Go Near Her State Of Origin

Due to the spate of kidnap cases being recorded in tthe Eastern part of the country, Nollywood stars from that region are afraid of going home as usual to celebrate the coming yuletide.

One of such is beautiful and talented actress and movie producer, Uche Jombo, who has declared that she will not go anywhere near her state of origin, Abia State, until the present spate of kidnappings is tackled by the government.
When asked if she’s scared of being kidnapped, the award-winning actress, who said the act has dented the image of the state, said, “I am not scared. I am Ada nganga 1. I am a proud Abia girl. Until everything is put in place, I will not step foot in my village and not even in Aba because they are not safe. No production can take me there. I have not been to my state in a long time and I am not planning to go there until the kidnapping issue is addressed.”
The actress, who just returned from the United States, where she had gone to promote her new movie, Holding Hope, will soon be jetting out of the country again to Canada for the same purpose.

"My Husband Ensures I Do Not Kiss In Movies" - THELMA OKODUWA

In Nollywood, it’s different strokes for different folks with regards to married actresses and how tolerant their husbands are towards their playing romantic roles in movies.

While the likes of Omotola Jalade do not have a qualm acting romantic roles, Nollywood diva, Thelma Okoduwa says her husband is allergic to such roles.
helma explains: “He has a problem with that but at least he believes in me. Before we got married, he used to insist on going through the script before I accept any role to ensure I won’t be kissing anybody.
But right now he’s fine with it. It’s not as if he’s giving me the free hands to do all that but there’s a limit to which I can go.”
On how she met her husband, the star actress says: “I actually met my husband in the course of my job when I went to Abuja to do a stage performance. He didn’t come to watch the show because he’s not a Nollywood fan so he didn’t know me at all. But somehow I ran into him through a friend.”
The screen diva also explains the reason she’s always wearing jeans.
In her own words, “Most times you’ll find me in my jeans because I’m most comfortable in them anytime, any day. They’re comfortable and smart. My husband does not really have a problem with what I wear though I’m not the type who goes overboard in my dressing. I wear clothes that accentuate my figure and I know the difference between looking sexy and decent.”
