“Over the last few years, I have watched with keenness and amazement the rate at which the entrepreneurial spirit has taken over Nigeria. Today, we have a lot of young people stepping out to ‘do their thing’ against all odds. Needs we never knew existed are being discovered daily and smart entrepreneurs are stepping out to meet these needs. Talk about professional make-over services, facility management services, event planning or even home shopping services. The list is endless. Nigeria has seen the beginning of a new dawn.
“With all the small/medium businesses springing up daily however, one thing really bothers me - most of them lack clear cut differentiation in the market. They are pretty much the same thing, offering the same thing. There is no way to tell A from B. In other words, these SMEs do not have definite brand differentiation or positioning. But beyond that, I have also discovered that most of the entrepreneurs who own these businesses, are either oblivious of the need to brand their businesses or have the wrong mindset to it. Some believe branding is for the big shots as they are the ones who have the financial muscle to hire brand agencies. Others think branding is a project you engage in when you have made a lot of money and not when you are just starting out...(to be continued on Saturday)
